A vessel is formed from a lump of clay with care, however, it is the empty space within the vessel that makes it useful.

-Laozi

A few years back I had a number of influential elders in my life pass in a short span of time. This loss and the grieving process opened me up to connecting more with my narratives and designs on my pots. Ceremonial pottery dates back to ancient times when numerous cultures decorated their wares with elaborate scenes depicting important events, animals or traditions. This decorating and customization brings a uniqueness and personality to each piece. It can be a celebration of life, a snapshot in time or in memoriam of one who has passed. I find purpose in commissioning urns for families going through this time in their lives. I love the journey of designing the illustration on a three dimensional surface and the process of applying the paint, but the special part is getting to know the inspiration behind the vessel and creating something beautiful and one of a kind. Whether the urn is thrown on the potter’s wheel or constructed in my own personal style, each piece is handmade with love in honor and remembrance.

  • The base of each vessel is started on the pottery wheel.

A narrow but refined foot to support a taller form.

  • Building up from the thrown base with coils adds texture and a uniqueness to each vessel.

The coil building process is one of my favorite methods of working in clay. The exposed coils in each piece are a nod to me as a maker and when I see the finished work I feel connected to the story the surface tells.

  • After adding the coils the vessel is placed back on the pottery wheel to finish the top.

This process allows me to have a more refined rim on the piece as well as helps in the construction of the lid.

  • The surface is painted with colored Terra Sigillatas. This refined slip technique has a durable, silky & satiny finish without needing a glaze.

The smooth surface is a dream to paint on too!

  • Every design is unique and as personalized as I can get. I start by sketching with pen to establish a layout then I handpaint the designs.

Whether pet portraits or intricate designs based on personal interests, I love getting to know those for which I am designing and painting.
